Buggies were the most popular type of personal transportation of the 1800's. During the early years of the horse and buggy era, owning a buggy was a status symbol and was limited to those persons wealthy enough to afford it- such as merchants, bankers, lawyers and doctors. Near the turn of the century, mass- production of buggies brought prices down to where more people could afford to own them. There were many models and styles from which to choose - varying with the manufacturers.
