Happy Holidays and Season Greetings!
December, 2001
Everyone at HWWS hopes you and your families are enjoying the Winter Season. Our Fall started out busy and has become even more busy as the New Year approaches. The business of wagon building has seemed to repeat it’s cycle of Chuckwagons, Hitchwagons, Stagecoaches, and Buggies. Currently we just finished a Small Studebaker Hitchwagon Replica complete with all brass replica lamps and brass trimmings for the Great American Hitch of Clydesdales. Even our hitchwagon craftsman was surprised at how well the colors and trim complimented each other. As many of you noticed from the article in the Draft Horse Journal the “big – really big” Hitchwagon of Cape Cod Siding – Craig Grange, left our shop early in the fall. It’s shear size and dimensions are really deceiving until you stand next to it.
Wells Fargo’s #4 and #5 Stagecoach are currently under construction. The process of building two at a time really makes time pass slowly. There just isn’t the kind of daily process you are use to seeing when looking into the shop. Then as the piles of parts start to be assembled, the progress is easily measured.
A museum has entrusted our craftsmen with the task of restoring an original Abbott and Downing Stagecoach. It is nearly 140 years old and except for missing some parts and needing a lot of finish work, it shows the strength of design to be in such good shape yet today. Deciphering the clues as to the parts and placement of leather work it originally had, is keeping Doug busy in the reference materials.
A new Hitchwagon that is destined for England was just started a few weeks ago. Working with its future owner has been very enjoyable and gives us a new sense of pride in workmanship, considering the new audience who will be viewing it.
Did I mention Sleighs? People always think about sleighs when December hits and the mood usually subsides about January 1. We have several to restore that are close to being done and now reside in the upholstery shop. We always keep a few used cutters on hand for restoration or to sell as is.
Happy Trails till next time,
